Ferdinand

I see too many kids movies....
Ferdinand was pleasant and filled with good kid messages. It had enough, barely, to make it survivable for adults. It is definitely not a classic of the likes of Kubo or Frozen, but if your kid wants to see it, there is no reason to avoid it - except the crazy ticket prices.....

The Arrival

The Arrival is one of the smartest movies I've seen in a long time.
Amy Adams is terrific. Her character is enigmatic. It is clear that she has suffered some trauma at the beginning of the movie and you think that informs her character's actions through out. Is she going mad from grief, or mad from spending too much time working on with the aliens, or just cracking under the pressure. The twist at the end is brilliant and makes her even more courageous.
The plotting is well timed. The plot itself is perfect for the age of anxiety in which we live; where there are nations that can end life on earth out of fear or belligerence.
Do we really need an externally forced existential crisis to bring us to our senses? I hope not.

The Last Jedi

Unlike a lot of people, I didn’t go into this movie hoping for answers to Snoke’s back story or Rey’s parents. I was just hoping for a good movie that moved the story forward and set up the final conflict for the last movie. I was hoping to find out why Luke had gone missing.
Given my expectations, I was not disappointed. It was a good movie and it did explain why Luke left the building. It also provided a satisfying ending for Luke and set up the final showdown nicely.
It was not a perfect movie. Leia’s magic force flight was sort of silly. Finn and Rose’s trip to the casino planet felt out of place and long. Leia allowing Holodo to pilot the cruiser in a suicide mission seemed out of character. The insane battle on the mineral planet was terrible strategy. The shirtless shot of Adam Driver seemed unnecessary.
By the end of the movie, Finn and Rose’s trip made sense and played into the overall theme of the movie.
After reading some of the fan backlash, I know that a lot people hated the reveal that Rey’s parents were trash and that Snoke’s backstory was just whitewashed. I, however, found that to be perfect. It plays directly into the overall theme of the movie and helps drive the overarching story of the nine movie arch.
The story starts with the stagnant Jedi order and the stagnant Republic fracturing over a trade war between rich planets, follows the destruction of that stagnation into a new hope where the same privileged group try to restore the old order, and moves into a new phase where a group of nobodies lights the spark of renewal.
It is also fitting that Ben Solo turns out to be truly evil. His evil is even beyond that of his Grandfathers. Anikan was corrupted by his love. Ben Solo is corrupted by his arrogance and privilege. That he will be brought down by the lowest of the low is only fitting.

IONQ

A few months ago our intrepid Forester finally needed to be put to rest. At 195,000 miles she started developing phantom electrical issues. It would have cost way to much and been way to much of a hassle to get her repaired.

Our initial thoughts were to replace it with a new Outback because our current Outback is not exactly new. We need to have at least one big car to haul all of our stuff when we go on vacation, and the Outback is perfect for that.

For as much as a wanted to be a family with one big car for vacations, and one small car for regular use, I more wanted to avoid having two car payments at the same time. I wasn’t sure that the current Outback would survive long enough to outlive the payments on a new car.

I also wasn’t ready to get a stripped down econobox.

Then H made the decision that we should at least look at small cars and that I would drive it. She really liked the security provided by the AWD and the size of the Outback.

We made a list of small cars that included a Honda Fit, an Impreza, and a Prius.

Then on the way to test drive cars, H asked if Hyundai had a hybrid we should try out. I sort of remembered the commercials about the hybrid for the rest of us, so we decided to make a stop at Hyundai as well.

In Framingham, the car dealers are all basically in a line along Route 9, so test driving a lot of cars in an afternoon is very easy.

Our first stop was Hyundai where they did have a hybrid called the IONQ. It drove like a nice little car and came with some nice perks for a good price.

Then we went to Honda. The Fit is an econobox. It is a great econobox, but that is not what we wanted. It also was not exactly cheap for what it was.

Then we went to Subaru. The Impreza is a nice car, and the new ones get decent gas mileage. However, to get it with the options we wanted, the Impreza’s price stopped looking like a great deal versus an Outback.

We skipped Toyota. We have driven Prius on multiple occasions and not enjoyed it. They are also not well priced.

It was clear that the IONQ was the way to go. It had the best combination of comfort and price.

We have had it for a few months now and the IONQ has been great. It gets 50 miles to the gallon and has a ton a great driver assist features. Some of the best things about it are the Apple Car Play integration, the adaptive cruise control, and the rear cross traffic warnings. We have not had too much call to use the crash detection feature yet, but testing that is not high on our list.

H uses it on her commute daily and is very happy with it.

Pete’s Dragon

This update of the 1977 movie is perfect for the current eco-conscious moment. It takes the tale of a boy and his dragon and turns it into a metaphor for preserving nature. This is not an indictment. The movie has a good heart, good acting, and good visuals.
The whole family liked it. At times, I found it a little preachy. I particularly found Robert Redford’s magic grampa character annoying. It is not Redford’s fault. I think he played the part as it was written. I just didn’t like the character.
Overall the movie is good and has a good message.

My Little Pony - The Movie

What is there to say about this movie?

It is pretty much what one would expect from a feature length episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magical but with better animation.

If you don’t like the ponies, you will not like this movie. It is uncomplicated and a little saccharine.

If, like my daughter and I, you like the ponies, the movie is great. The twin underlying messages, women are kick ass and friendship is magical, are great for a young girl.

Little Evil

Netflix has pumped out a ton of original content. Some of it good, some of it terrible, and some of it just mediocre.
Little Evil is one of the just mediocre pieces. It is funny and has an interesting premise. However, it does very little with its strengths. It turns into just a silly brofest.
It is nice that the ultimate resolution is that a man learns that loving a child no matter his lineage is valuable. I just wish it came in a better package.

The Defenders

As the culmination of five seasons of Netflix super hero shows, The Defenders had a lot of expectations. I knew it would never be as good as Daredevil season one or Jessica Jones, but I hoped it would be better than Iron Fist. I hoped it would be as good as Luke Cage. I hoped it avoided some of the pitfalls of Dardevil season two where the sheer number of characters and plot lines got muddled.
I ended up satisfied. It was a good, entertaining romp. The myriad of characters did mean a lack of depth. However, keeping the plot tight meant things never got muddled.
Sigourney Weaver’s villain was deliciously evil and her downfall at the hands of her own creation was as surprising as it was inevitable. Madame Gou is also an enigmatic shade of grey. The male cast of the Hand were predictable and boring. They hardly seem dynamic enough to be the fallen angels of Kung Lo.
Electra was never stable and never a follower. She, like the other female leaders of the Hand, powerful and grey. Her internal conflict makes her powerful and dangerous.
On the righteous side of the battle, it is also the female characters that come out as the truly dynamic and strong members of the team. The boys in many ways are the muscle and the laugh track. Colleen, Clair, and Misty take great risks and provide the true moral spine of the group. The “super” heros do a lot of the fighting and are constantly at risk, but they are super.
One surprise in the series was its rehabilitation of Danny Rand. In the The Defenders Danny becomes more human and more likable. He has been humbled by the loss of Kung Lo. The interplay between Danny and the rest of the more seasoned members of the team also makes him funny. His brashness and immaturity seem less smug.
The most static member of the group is Matt Murdock. He has not grown much since we first met him. He is self righteous and conflicted. His decision to save Eclectra is predictably noble and predictably self-destructive. Unlike many people, I was not shocked by it or by the fact that he survived.
I also don’t find that his survival cheapens the ending of the series in any way. The rest of the group rightfully mourn his loss. Karen, true to her character, is a sucker for lost causes and would mourn for Matt alive or dead.

The Little Prince

I have only vague memories of the book, so I had no expectations going in to this movie. Neither did my daughter.

The movie started a little slow and is definitely darker than I expected. Neither comment is a criticism.

The slow start allows for the required character development and the darkness allows for the ultimately uplifting ending to have its power.

The movie is in the same vein as James and the Giant Peach or Corraline. It is not as scary as Corraline, but shares the same sort of sensibility.

The movie features a strong female lead which I think is great.

It also deals with loss and grieving.

However, its central message is that one should always be true to themselves and never lose their sense of wonder.

The movie is not really for preschool aged children. Second graders and over, depending on how sensitive they are, should be able to handle it.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel's movie making talent seems boundless. Guardians combined huge sci-fi set pieces, just plain oddness, a good dash of goofiness and mixed it up with a plot about saving the galaxy and somehow came out with a great movie that was fun to watch.
I'm not saying that Guardians deserves any Oscars or that it leaves you pondering big questions after you leave the theater, but it is a ton of fun to watch.
I cannot wait to see the sequel when it gets to iTunes and I can rent it when the wife and kid are out.

ARQ

Netflix's original content is a little all over the map when it comes to quality. In my experiences, it is either great or terrible. There was never anything that was just OK.
Then I watched ARQ. It is an interesting, if well worn, premise. The acting is solid. The story is solid. The pacing is well done. The sets are believable.
ARQ is a solid, if not terribly inspired, piece of genre cinema.
It is good to know that Netflix can do workman like quality. That makes me feel like they could have a long future of in the content business. Nobody lasts very long when they can only hit the extremes.
The only thing I didn't like about ARQ was the ending. The movie didn't quite earn the right to have the sort of ending it had. However, like everything else about ARQ, the ending was just fine.

Sky High

Not even Bruce Campbell could make this a good movie. It was a mid budget after school special that some how made it to the big screen.
As a Netflix family movie night entry, it was perfectly fine.
The funniest part of the movie was that I mistook the actress who plays flower girl for the actress that plays Jemma Simmons.

Dr. Strange

Having a kid makes it hard to catch the MCU in the theater, where they should seen. Netflix, on the other hand, makes it easy to see them at the same scale as the MNU.
Dr. Strange definitely needed to be seen on the bigger scale for the visuals. The same cannot be said for the story. The plot, the story, the characters all felt like they belonged along side the MNU.
Dr. Strange was a great movie, but it didn't feel like an MCU film. I saw Civil War on Netflix and Civil War was just bigger.
Family and friendship being torn apart over the moral chooses involved in protecting the world, are much more compelling than a self centered know it all gaining the ability to manipulate time and space. Strange is the worst parts of Tony Stark mixed up with Iron Fist mysticism.
Maybe it is just that some of the other MCU characters are just more likable and trustworthy. Maybe, Strange would have fit better in the MNU.

Smurfs: The Lost Village

I had low expectations for Smurfs. I wasn't much of a fan was I was a kid. So, I would have been happy if the movie didn't suck.
I was surprised at how good it turned out to be.
The visuals are stunning and the music was good. The characters were about what one would expect. It was the story that really stood out.
Smurfette finally got to come into her own. She finds her true inner Smurf and gets to save the day. As the parent of and adopted girl, I thought it had a great message.

Iron Fist

I know it was totally panned by just about everyone, but it was a much watch if one has any chance of following The Defenders this summer.
After struggling through the first few episodes, it did get better. I actually didn't think the first few episodes were terrible, they just weren't very good. By the end Danny became more interesting, even if the actor is terrible, and the relationship with Colleen was a nice, if predictable, addition. I think it was the twist in the middle of the season, that turned things around.
None of this means that I though that Iron Fist was on the same level as any of the other Netflix Marvel series. It is not. Danny lacks the complexities of the other characters Netflix choose to portray and Finn Jones is the weakest actor they have picked for a lead role. I'm sure a better writing team could have found something about Danny to make him interesting. Marvel found a way to make Tony Stark interesting.
While it was not up to the high bar set by its peers, Iron Fist is not terrible. There were some pretty weak episodes of Daredevil that needed to be suffered through as well.
I'm just glad it is over and hope that The Defenders will be a return to form and that the other leads can cover for Finn Jones.

Moana

Bug finally got me to see Moana. It was a perfectly good Disney princess movie. I have to say that I like the new Disney princess movies. The princesses have agency and their parents do not have to die.
Moana gets to discover her true self, save her people, and be generally awesome. The songs are good and the animation is of typically high quality.

Logan

It is rare that I long for a movie to come out. I watched every trailer and waited for Logan to come out. I even got pre-clearance to see it on opening night. To put this into more context, I also have not seen an X-Men movie since Last Stand and the first attempt at a Wolverine stand-alone movie.
However, I loved Wolverine when I was a teenager. He was the only comic book hero who actually viscerally understood that he participated in violence and that it had a cost. He was broken in ways that others were not, and still found away to be a hero. Violence has a price and he paid it.
The trailers led me to believe that this would be a movie that got Wolverine and would show him and the costs of a life of violence.
I was not let down. The Logan in the movie is broken in ways that cannot be fixed. The years of fighting have worn him down. The adamantium that makes him unbreakable is killing him. He just wants to live out his remaining days in peace. Unfortunately, his peace is disturbed by caring for a mentally unstable Charles Xavier whose brain can randomly unleash devastating mental blasts that may, or may not have killed his students and Logan's only friends. Into the mix is tossed an orphan girl who is cloned from Logan's DNA and is being hunted down by a band of corporate killers who want their property back.
It sounds bleak, and it is. This is not an Avengers movie where there is a big, colorful set piece every fifteen minutes. There are long stretches of the movie where not much happens except people talking to each other about the stuff of life. It is more road trip movie than super-hero movie.
This is not to say the movie is without big fight scenes. It is rated R and it earns it in spades. The fight scenes are big and bloody. People get hurt, badly and obviously hurt.
Even the ending is perfect for a Wolverine movie. Bleak, broken, and yet hopeful. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart picked a great project for a swan song.

Trolls

Bug really wanted to see Trolls for movie night, so I begrudgingly gave in. I had no interest in seeing what looked like a glitter bomb of epic corporate greed that could only suck.
I was pleasantly surprised. It was not great, but it was good. The story was upbeat and had a good message. The soundtrack was kicking. I'm glad I only paid the $5 rental fee to see it, but it was better than some of the other kids movies I've seen recently.

Kubo and the Two Strings

I loved this movie. The story was dark, but not so dark that a six year old couldn't handle it. It ended sadly, but hopeful. The animation was lush. There was nothing about the movie that I did not like.
The thing I liked the best was Kobo and his relationship with Monkey. It is warm and complicated. The relationship with Beetle is simpler, but still loving.
So, I love the movie and think everyone should see it.
